Opinion
With Capital One Cup commitments now fulfilled the Premier League continues at a pace and WhoScored.com have suggested an XI for Gameweek 6 after a rundown of last weekend’s stat leaders.
A pick in last week’s tipster, Leighton Baines didn’t disappoint with two spectacular free-kicks against West Ham helping him earn week high WhoScored.com rating of 9.24. The only other player above the 9-mark was Villa’s Brad Guzan, whose penalty saving heroics helped the side keep their first league clean sheet in 27 matches.
It was Swansea City’s Michu who mustered the most shots at goal, with 1 of his 7 efforts finding the net against newly promoted Palace, while 2 goal Loïc Remy and Spurs duo Paulinho and Townsend were one behind on 6. Arsenal’s new star Mesut Özil produced a joint high of 7 key passes with Chelsea new boy Andre Schürrle, picking up his second and third assists of the season after just two league appearances.
With the previous record for tackles in a single game standing at 9 prior to last weekend, three players were able to top that figure. Pablo Zabaleta(10), Karim El Ahmadi (11) and Nathaniel Clyne (13) were those in question, while Fulham’s Steve Sidwell (7) racked up the most interceptions in the west London derby at the Bridge.
Gameweek 6 Suggested XI:
Norwich have scored just once in their last 4 league games and just twice in their last 5 matches against Stoke. Indeed, the Canaries’ run of 202 minutes without a goal in the league is the longest at present, while Begovic has kept a clean sheet in 2 of his last 3 matches.
Sunderland have only scored 12 goals in their last 24 matches against a Liverpool side that are unbeaten in 6 league away games. With the Merseysiders tipped to score from a set piece situation in WhoScored.com’s match forecast, Kolo Touré will hope to go one better than his Reds debut having struck the bar from a corner against Stoke.
Man City have kept a clean sheet in their last 3 league matches against Villa, who are without top scorer Christian Benteke. The Belgian has scored 10 of Villa’s last 17 goals at home so his absence will be a relief to compatriot Vincent Kompany, who is one of 3 City defenders to have scored in the last 5 encounters between the sides.
Southampton have kept clean sheets in 3 of their last 4 matches against Palace and in 3 of their 5 games already this season. Meanwhile, Holloway’s men have gone three hours without scoring a Premier League goal and Dejan Lovren has hit the ground running in Saints red, opening his account in a 1-0 win at Liverpool last weekend.
Everton have kept clean sheets in 7 successive home matches in the league and host a Newcastle side that have won just 3 of their last 22 league games on the road. Baines scored in both of his matches against the Magpies last season and, as mentioned previously, netted two magnificent free-kicks last weekend. Definitely captain material this weekend.
West Ham have scored 12 goals in their last 5 matches against Hull and Ravel Morrison has scored in 3 of his 4 starts in all competitions this season. The former United youngster has made a long awaited breakthrough into first team football and his goalscoring exploits mean that he could be a real find this season if he can keep his place.
Swansea have conceded more goals at home than any other side this season, doing so in just two matches (6), with Laudrup’s side without a win in 7 league games at the Liberty. The Gunners have won their last 11 away games in all competitions and Özil has more assists than any other player in the league (3) from just two appearances.
With 5 goals in his first 7 appearances of the season Yaya Touré has arguably made his strongest ever start to a Man City campaign with new manager Manuel Pellegrini at the helm. Villa are tipped to concede from a long shot in WhoScored.com’s match forecast so the fact that Touré has 4 from range in all competitions already this season is likely to cause concern amongst the home ranks.
All eyes will be on one man as Luis Suárez returns to league action after a 10-game ban and he’s scored in 4 of his last 5 appearances against Sunderland, netting 5 in those matches in total. The Black Cats are one of only two teams without a point at home this season, picking up all three just once in their last 10 league matches at the Stadium of Light.
Wayne Rooney has scored 5 goals in his last 5 appearances against West Brom and United have scored at least twice in their last 11 encounters against the Baggies. With four goals and 2 assists in his last 4 matches in all competitions the forward has returned to action in fine form, ridiculous head band and all.
Newcastle have conceded more headed goals than any other team this season (3) so Romelu Lukaku – who has 4 goals in his last 4 league appearances – will hope to recreate his heroics against West Ham last weekend. The Belgian scored once, picked up an assist and hit the woodwork in his two games against the Toon Army last season.
So here’s how they line up:

Will this be the first team to scoop the £100,000 jackpot?
